Adaptive Networks: Youth Leadership and Biodiversity-sustaining Agriculture in Benin

ÌÇÐÄVlog, a JSI Initiative, used youth-led research through consecutive Darwin funding to transform communities with local insight. Through this approach, young researchers in Northern Benin used local data to reshape the future of agroforestry by expanding adaptive youth-led systems from the ground up. This network of human collaboration mirrors the natural world itself. Just as April’s rains breathe life back into dry tropical forests and woodland savannas, rows of crops flourish and underground mycelium sprawls like a web connecting tree to shrub to crop.
Back above ground, a small group of young researchers in the community of Wéréké dispersed throughout their communities and the surrounding ecosystems, carrying clipboards over fallow pastures and smartphones across the season’s newly hydrated streams. They were on a mission to collect empirical data to answer some of their most burning questions. To what extent do family expectations deter their peers from pursuing agricultural entrepreneurship over traditional desk jobs? Do the birds from the Néré trees (Parkia biglobosa) really eat the grasshoppers destroying the soya crop? Can they successfully run their own ecoagricultural business?

These questions formed the basis of a participatory youth-led research activity that ÌÇÐÄVlog implemented in 2022 to understand local youth’s vision for their role in a green economy. These researchers administered behavioral science-informed questionnaires to their parents and community elders, collected recorded soundbites of insect-eating birds, and surveyed the grasshoppers. As their data grew, they validated powerful hypotheses, proving that thriving biodiversity safeguards agricultural outputs and that eco-friendly agroentrepreneurship is a highly viable way to sustain those very ecosystems while providing sustainable livelihoods.
While the youth-led research successfully inspired community-level investment in agroforestry, achieving true, sustainable change requires local communities to align with government policies. A Beninese agricultural law (Decree No 96-271) requires one tree to be planted every 10 meters. It is an excellent start, but, practically, a greater tree density is needed for underground mycelium to sustain an ecosystem. Ten meters of exploited land is a barren sea to a fungal thread. Isolated trees mark a fractured ecosystem where the symbiosis of its components is severed.

The youth researchers, armed with data from their communities, noted a social disconnect. Their findings indicated limited prospects for the traditional desk jobs expected of them, leaving them disconnected from their families’ ambitions and feeling siloed from the reality they wanted to build. The young researchers put a plan in motion to flip the paradigm, plotting their future as self-employed eco-entrepreneurs and leaders with their communities. They transformed collective village plots into sub-parcels they could manage individually to cultivate cash crops beneath native canopies and tap into local green markets.
Deep in the dark, cool earth, mycelium does not accept orders from a central brain. It is a complex, adaptive system that senses environmental shifts and quietly dispatches resources where they are most urgently needed. Under the sun, communities began to reflect their own adaptive systems—ones marked by decentralized leadership, grassroots problem-solving, and a unified drive to strengthen environmental, economic, and agricultural resilience from the ground up.
ÌÇÐÄVlog’s previous Darwin Initiative-funded Women-led, School-based Agroforestry in Benin (WSAB) project (2023–2025) supported women and youth in biodiversity-sustaining agriculture activities. With project assistance, Mothers of Students Associations (AMEs) integrated native plant species into local agriculture. Over 360 individuals participated in community planting events, successfully restoring 9.5 hectares of degraded land. These women-led microenterprises generated 1,180,000 FCFA in revenue, contributing 257,000 FCFA in cash and crops to school canteens, while indirectly supporting 10,729 people to adapt to a changing climate.
The work was lucrative, but demanding. Recognizing the disproportionate labor burden on the women, youth from the Wèrèkè community in Northern Benin shared their own agroforestry vision. Relying on their smartphone arsenals of biodiversity data, they joined forces with the AMEs. The community restructured its agricultural cooperatives, bringing in 10 youth members and dividing agroforestry plots into 40 rent-based sub-parcels. For a symbolic monthly rental fee of 1,000 FCFA, these young people committed to maintaining native trees while also leveraging the sub-parcels as individual startup enterprises. By harvesting and selling produce from these plots, the young people proved that native canopy management could yield reliable, real-world profit in a thriving local business reality.
It was time to get to work on Decree No 96-271 at scale. Building on the WSAB project’s impact, the latest AgroNative project (2024–2026) strengthened the threads of a collaborative web connecting local communities with government counterparts. Residents formed Natural Resource Management Committees (NRMCs) to oversee production, expanded to five new villages, and established NRMCs with 150 total members. Grassroots science took hold as over 170 individuals participated in BioBlitzes to catalogue native flora, all working toward a new target of sustainably managing 15 hectares of habitat to benefit 3,000 people.
To assess the ongoing value of these expanding efforts, ÌÇÐÄVlog facilitated a second round of participatory youth research through the AgroNative project. While the young researchers found that direct asset recipients were deeply focused and motivated, they also uncovered a vital ecosystem lesson. Individual farmers receiving donations to develop their own plots inadvertently fractured wider group engagement, proving that the long-term viability of this model relies on a fair structure that nurtures collective, shared cooperatives rather than isolating individual resources.
Today, all parties are committed to resilience. While youth haul water to saplings not quite ready to face drought, the mycelium transfers nutrients from mature specimens to younger siblings. Community funds are used to hire guards to protect saplings from wandering livestock, and mature native trees offer launching pads for birds managing the grasshopper populations.
Beneath Wéréké soil, a thick mycelial web spreads through the cool earth, swelling the soil with rich organic matter. The youth, the mothers, and the government workers have also built a symbiotic web. They decompose old, fractured paradigms and absorb fertile lessons from their research and community wisdom, breathing their knowledge into a future of new sustainable agroforestry approaches rooted in their communities’ knowledge.
